Mera Peak (6,476 meters / 21,247 feet) is the highest trekking peak in Nepal, offering one of the most thrilling yet achievable climbing experiences in the Himalayas. Located in the remote Hinku Valley of the Everest region, Mera Peak is an excellent choice for adventure seekers aiming to combine trekking with high-altitude mountaineering.
The climb to Mera Peak is non-technical, making it ideal for fit trekkers with basic climbing experience. The journey takes you through beautiful rhododendron forests, traditional Sherpa villages, and pristine alpine landscapes. As you ascend, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of five of the world’s highest mountains: Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga.
Upon your arrival, make your way to the airport terminal after completing the immigration formalities. Our representative will meet you at Tribhuwan International Airport. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu city. Our staff will assist you until the check-in procedure ends at the hotel. You can either rest at the hotel or visit our office for additional information about the trip.
We take a morning flight to Lukla. If we are lucky enough to get a ticket for the first flight, we get to fly directly from Kathmandu to Lukla. If not, we drive to Rammechhap and proceed to Lukla by flight.
After reaching Lukla, we meet the rest of the crew, sort our luggage, and trek to Chatunga. There are several trails that head away from the main trail on this section, so sticking to the group is the best option before arriving at Chhutang.
From Chatunga, we head to our next destination Thuli Kharka via the Zatra La Pass. We walk past rhododendron forests and grazing pastures of yaks. It is a tough crossing, and we can feel the altitude. We climb the Kalo Himal ridge covered with stones and prayer flags.
From Tuli Kharka, our trail is a mixture of both uphill and downhill trekking through dense forest filled with rhododendron, oak, pine and juniper trees. During our trek, we will have magnificent views of Mera Peak and surrounding snow-capped peaks
Head on to the Upper Hinku valley. As we get higher, the treeline disappears. There are no major villages at this altitude, only kharkas or grazing meadows for yaks. Overnight at a teahouse in Thaknak.
Today’s trek takes us to Khare. It is a short but difficult hike as we are steadily gaining altitude. We ascend the Dig Glacier and weave past the glacial lake of Charpati Tal. We slowly descend to Dig Kharka. Overnight at a teahouse in Khare.
An acclimatization day before your climb lets you take part in pre-climb training conducted by our guides. You will get to try out your climbing skills before making it to the mountain. Ascend and descend on the rocky slope using harness and climbing equipment.
Leaving the Khara, we will follow the trail that climbs over through Mera La Pass and continue trekking along the rocky and often snow-covered trail towards Mera Peak High Camp. Once at the high camp, our Sherpa crew will quickly set up the camps and make necessary checks on our health conditions and climbing gears.
Today is the day we all have been desperately waiting for. Properly equipped and fully acclimatized, we start early with the aim to reach the summit before noon. Strong winds after midday can create obstacles in reaching the summit. We start around 2 in the morning and after having breakfast we climb up the glacier and onto a ridge. Once at the top, we are rewarded with magnificent views of five spectacular 8000-meter peaks – Everest 8848 m, Cho Oyu 8201m, Makalu 8463 m, Kanchenjunga 8586 m as well as Nuptse 7855 m and Chamlang 7319 m.
After having achieved our target – the summit of Mera Peak, we will retrace our steps from Khare and pass through Thangnak before heading further towards Kothe.
Leaving Kothe, our trail is uphill trekking through dense rhododendron forest that goes over the western section of Hinku valley towards Tuli Kharka.
Leaving Thuli Kharka, we once again cross the Zatrwa La pass (4,600m) pass. In about 2 hours we reach the pass. The view is incredible, and we can view part of the trail that we crossed. Hinku Valley, Numbur Himal, Kongde, Dudh Kunda, and Khumbila look amazing. We walk to Lukla taking a downward trail.
We return to Kathmandu by flight. After reaching the city, we head to our hotel and take a rest. You can spend the rest of the day relaxing at the hotel or exploring the city. You can walk down Thamel and shop for souvenirs.
